Cultural Exhibition
Discover the stories of the local Italian community, calling Nelson home since the late 1800s.
After launching as a quick pop-up at Club Italia during Tuku Whakatū 2025, the Italians in Nelson exhibition makes its full public debut at the 2026 festival. Created with the support of Club Italia and Nelson City Council, this project is a proud celebration of the Italian legacy in the region, packed with stories and pictures sourced from local families.

Twelve panels, countless stories
How far would you go for a better life? For generations of Italians, the answer was always the same: as far as it takes.
The exhibition features 12 panels, all documenting the Italian presence in Nelson from the 1880s to today. Many families trace their roots back to Massa Lubrense and other parts of Southern Italy, carrying with them a strong sense of identity and community.
Preserving a community’s heritage
For Club Italia, this project has been a labour of love.
It’s a chance to honour the past, keep memories alive and share the stories that shaped who we are today. We hope it resonates with longtime locals and new visitors alike. Come take a look!
